Online retailing giant Amazon has announced that more than 900 new permanent and temporary jobs will be created over the next five years with the opening of its new customer service centre at Waverley Gate in Edinburgh.
The new centre, due to open this August, will handle customer enquiries regarding Amazon.co.uk, including technical support for the Amazon Kindle and MP3.
Also due to open this year is Amazon’s new one million square foot fulfillment centre in Dunfermline, which will create 750 new jobs as well as a further 1,500 temporary roles over the Christmas period.
"As our business continues to grow and we move into new areas like Grocery, Sports and Clothing, our customer services support needs to expand as well," commented Allan Lyall, vice president of European Operations and Customer Service at Amazon. "Edinburgh is an outstanding location, providing us with access to a highly-skilled workforce who will help us to achieve the high standards of customer service that shoppers at Amazon.co.uk expect."
He continued: "Scotland has been home to a number of Amazon fulfillment centres for many years and we are delighted to be expanding our operations within the country with a new customer service centre and fulfillment facility.”
Scotland’s first minister Alex Salmond stated: "The Scottish Government, Scottish Development International and Scottish Enterprise are working hard to attract new jobs and investment to communities across the country. This announcement reinforces and supports our message that Scotland is an attractive and competitive destination for major global companies to invest and do business."
Amazon.co.uk began trading in October 1998 and is headquartered in Slough, Berkshire.
